Women's sizing carries the widest variation of anything in the catalogue: the same nominal size can differ by several centimetres at the waist between two labels, because each brand grades from its own fit model. A silhouette changes the answer again — a wrap, an A-line and a bodycon cut in one size are built around three different relationships between bust, waist and hip. Reading the garment's own measurements, and whether the fabric is described as woven or stretch, is worth more here than the size number.

Menswear publishes more real numbers than womenswear does — a collar and sleeve, a waist and inseam, a chest and a length letter — and where those numbers exist they beat any size label. What they leave out is the assumption underneath them: the drop a jacket is cut for, the rise on a trouser, the layering room in a knit. Those are usually stated in words on the product page rather than in the size chart.

Some categories are not sized against a body at all. A shoe is built on a last, so the same numeric size runs differently between two brands and between one brand's own sneaker and boot lines. A bag has capacity and a strap drop instead of a fit. And in shared basics — denim, t-shirts, tailoring — the cut name and the fabric composition decide the fit far more than which department the piece is filed under.
