Why sizes differ
A clothing size is not a measurement. It is a label a brand assigns to a set of garment dimensions it chose, using a fit model it chose, for a market it chose. Nothing obliges two brands to agree, and in practice they routinely do not — the same nominal size can differ by several centimetres at the waist between two labels sitting on the same shop floor.
That variation is not random, though, and it is not unknowable. It comes from a small number of concrete things: the garment's actual measurements, the fabric's composition and how much it gives, the cut's intended ease, and where the brand's grading rules place each size relative to the last. Once you can read those four things off a product page, most of the guesswork disappears.
These guides work through them one at a time — how to take your own measurements so they are worth comparing against, how to read a size chart and a composition line, and how the same numbers behave differently in denim, in knitwear, and in tailoring. They are written to be useful whether or not you ever sign in to Shaku.
