The same layering-room question that applies to any outerwear applies here: a coat sized to fit close over a t-shirt won't have room for a sweater underneath it, and brands vary in how much room they build into a given size by design — some women's outerwear is cut close and fitted, some intentionally roomy. The garment's own description ("fitted," "relaxed," "oversized") is a better guide than the size number alone.
The shoulder seam is still the one measurement sizing up or down can't fix: a coat with shoulders cut too narrow will pull and restrict movement no matter what size you try next, since sizing up adds width everywhere except the shoulder point. When a retailer publishes a shoulder-to-shoulder measurement, it's worth checking before the chest number.
Insulated styles like a puffer add real bulk on top of the size number, not just warmth — a true-to-size measurement taken from an uninsulated shell doesn't describe how much room the same size will have once it's filled with down or synthetic fill. Comparing a brand's insulated and uninsulated lines by their actual garment measurements, not just the shared size label, avoids ordering a puffer that reads noticeably tighter than expected.
