“Dress size” is one of the least standardized numbers in clothing, because a dress is really three garments in a trench coat: a bust fit, a waist fit, and a hip fit, layered into one silhouette. A wrap dress can be generous through the hip and tight at the waist; an A-line does the opposite; a bodycon cut demands all three measurements agree at once. The same size 8 across those three shapes can fit three different bodies.

Fabric changes the equation again. A dress cut from a stable woven fabric fits close to its stated measurements; the same pattern cut in a jersey or a fabric with added elastane will wear smaller because the material itself stretches to meet you. Two dresses in the same size, from the same brand, in different fabrics, can fit noticeably differently.

The practical habit that helps most: read the retailer's own garment measurements (bust/waist/hip in inches or centimetres, not just the size label) before ordering, and check whether the fabric is described as stretch, woven, or structured.
