Outerwear fit is judged differently from a shirt or a t-shirt: the question isn't just “does it fit my chest” but “does it fit my chest with whatever I'm wearing underneath it.” A coat sized to your bare chest measurement will feel restrictive over a sweater. Brands vary a lot in how much layering room they build into a given size — some cut outerwear slim by design, others intentionally roomy.

The shoulder seam is the single most reliable fit point on a coat or jacket, because unlike the chest or waist it can't be fixed by sizing up or down — sizing up to fix a narrow shoulder just adds bulk everywhere else. If a retailer publishes a shoulder-to-shoulder measurement, it's usually worth more than the chest number for judging fit.

Insulated pieces add one more variable: heavier insulation adds real bulk, not just warmth, so a true-to-size chest measurement on an uninsulated shell will not describe an insulated parka in the same size. Compare garment measurements, not just the size label, especially when moving between a brand's lightweight and insulated lines.
